Learners explore possible adaptation ideas for an existing creative product, including:
b) possible constraints and/or opportunities
c) target audience

A) Suitability for the new medium.

One adaptation I would love to see Hollywood take on as a project is the video game Grand Theft Auto V as a multi-series TV show. Grand Theft Auto V (Aka GTA V) is a video game that revolves around three characters and their intertwining lives as they commit crime and make money. There are 5 distinct Heists committed by Franklin, Michael, and Trevor throughout the game. These can all serve as season finales or mid-season finales as there is a key set up towards every one of them, with a big pay off at the end. Each heist sees the crew move onto something else right afterwards and this would help create interest for each of the new seasons.

Series 1: North Yankton Prologue, Jewellery Store Heist (Robbing a high-end store so they can pay back a crazy millionaire.

Series 2: Merryweather Job. (Doing their best to mess with a private Miltia)

Series 3: The Paleto Heist (Funding), The Bureau Raid (Stealing information from the FBI through an inside job)

Series 4: The Big Score (Raiding the national bank)

B) Possible Constraints and/or opportunities

One big constraint about adapting any video games into a new media is that the input from the player is what makes the video game so unique compared to every other type of media. Controlling the characters as they fight their way through situations, solve puzzles, and decorate their cars, is something that can only be done in a video game and each experience is tailored to a every single player because of it.

However, because GTA V is a game that focuses on action, spectacle, and story, a TV show adaptation could be perfect. There is a big audience for shows like this when some of the most popular TV shows of this decade are Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Barry, Watchmen and more. All these shows prey on the suspense and actions of their stories and this is something that is in abundance in GTA V.

C) Target Audience

There are three protagonists whom are all male but differ in age range, race, and quality of life. Michael is a rich, old, white, American, man from the city. Trevor is a poor, old, man from Canada who resides in the desert. Franklin is a poor, black, young, American man from the suburbs. All three protagonists are completely different besides the fact that they are involved in organised crime. This means that people of many backgrounds have something to enjoy about the show, broadening the target audience. While some female viewers may be alienated, the show has the ability to attract people from all around the world.

This TV show would be catered to people in the age range of 18-23 who are male and make average pay. This would suit the majority of viewers on the US channel, AMC. Broadcasting shows like Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, AMC caters to a target audience that is the same as the one that Grand Theft Auto would cater to.

Released in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V is widely recognised as the greatest video game of all time. It would be harder to make an underperforming show than a brilliant show when you consider the source material you'd have. Grand Theft Auto V has sold 115,000,000 copies throughout its existence despite having an age rating of 18 and older.

Within 24 hours of its release, GTA V generated $800,000,000. This equates to approximately 11,200,000 copies sold. If a TV show had 11,200,000 viewers, it would be great numbers for whatever channel it was on. In comparison, Season 1 of the Walking Dean had 5,300,000 in its' premiere episode and only reached 6,000,000 in the season 1 finale. The record high for The Walking Dead is just under 8,000,000 viewers - a far stretch from 11,200,000.

R Rated TV shows in the United States are among the highest rates by critics right now and it's making all the shows more and more popular. Breaking Bad sits at average rating of 9.5/10 on IMDb from 1,300,000 reviews despite an age rating of 18 in the UK.
